The Song That Turned Street Struggles Into One of Hip-Hop’s Greatest Anthems

Some songs become hits. Others become symbols. Wu-Tang Clan’s “C.R.E.A.M.” did both. Released in 1994 as the third single from Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the track gave hip-hop one of its most enduring phrases: “Cash Rules Everything Around Me.” Beneath its unforgettable hook was a powerful story about poverty, survival, and the difficult choices facing young people growing up in New York.

The song’s origins were deeply personal. It was originally titled “Lifestyles of the Mega-Rich” and began as a much longer crime narrative before producer RZA stripped it down to its emotional core. Inspectah Deck later recalled writing his verses years earlier while “standing in front of the building with crack in my sock,” giving the song an authenticity that few rap records could match.

The chorus became just as legendary as the verses. Method Man borrowed the phrase “Cash Rules Everything Around Me” from his friend Rader Rukus, while the famous “dolla, dolla bill, y’all” referenced Jimmy Spicer’s early rap single “Money (Dolla Bill Y’all).” Combined with RZA’s haunting production, those lines helped turn “C.R.E.A.M.” into one of the most recognizable songs in hip-hop history.

At a time when much of gangsta rap focused on larger-than-life images of wealth and power, Wu-Tang Clan chose a different path. “C.R.E.A.M.” explored the realities of growing up with very little, where money represented survival rather than luxury. Its honesty gave East Coast hip-hop one of its defining anthems and showed that personal storytelling could be just as powerful as bravado.

More than thirty years later, “C.R.E.A.M.” remains one of the most influential rap songs ever recorded. It established Wu-Tang Clan as one of hip-hop’s defining groups and proved that the genre could tell deeply human stories without sacrificing its edge.
